Mountain biking is considered an extreme sport, and it has become increasingly popular in the past few years. The sport involves riding specially designed bicycles off road, especially over very rough terrain. These bicycles are specially designed for high durability and for performing well on rough terrain. Riders wear protective gear and often carry a backpack that contains water, supplies, and equipments and tools needed for repairing the bike. There are various championships held all over the world for mountain biking, and the sport has been included in the Olympics since 1996.
There are various mountain biking categories, and the main ones include trials riding, cross-country, downhill, dirt jumping, and free ride.
This involves, jumping and hopping the bike over various obstacles, without letting the feet touch the ground. This can be played in an urban or off-road environment. The rider must have very good balance, and should known techniques for overcoming different obstacles. Trial bikes have wheels measuring 26, 24, or 20 inches, and some bikes do not have a saddle.
This involves riding the bike between two points or in a circuit, and the ride will include descents and climbs over different types of terrain. For this category, an XC bike is used, which weighs about nine to thirteen kilograms, and has 0 to five inches suspension at the front, and sometimes at the rear as well.
As the name suggests, this is mainly riding the bike downhill. Riders have to travel to the point of descent by means other than cycling. The bike used for downhill riding has a heavier frame, equipped with larger disc brakes, and has suspensions at the front and rear.
